1995-Randolph "Bun" Veysey

 

Bun Veysey was born and educated in Woodstock and has been a continuous resident of Carleton County.

He was a versatile performer having played on nine championship teams including N.B., N.B. /P.E.I, and was a Maritime in baseball, basketball, hockey and softball. His competitive career spanned the years 1947 and 1973.

Influenced by his faith, Veysey’s philosophies in life and sport are dedication, fair play, appreciation and enjoyment of the game.

He was presented the Sentinel Press Trophy in 1965 as Woodstock’s Outstanding Athlete for the decades of the 1950’s and ‘60s.

Among his laurels and tributes are:

·   Score 7 goals in the 12- 9 loss in an exhibition game against a troupe of professionals made up of members of the Boston Bruins and their minor league Kingston affiliate.

·   Received three awards: high scorer, first All-star centre, and M.V.P. in a 1958 Maritime Invitation Tournament.

·   Centred the "Veysey Line” the season of 1970-71 in the Saint John Valley League, with sons Jeff and Sid as wingers.

·   Battled .521 during the 1950s Maritime Juvenile Championship season.

·   Led the team with a .315 average in the NB Senior championship season of 1953.

·   Stole 28 bases in the 1956 NB Senior League, finishing second in that category.

·   Selected to the Canadian/American All-star Baseball team to play against "barnstorming” major leaguers in Houlton. Playing first base, was the only member to the Can/Am squad to play the entire game. At the plate he collected one single in four at bats.

·   "Bun Veysey had a gift of putting the puck in the net; a number of years he has scored more than 60 goals, which must be some sort of provincial hockey record. He’s scored as many as a dozen in a single game.” – Bill Donovan (Telegraph-Journal)

·   "Bun was Woodstock’s nuclear weapon. Since nobody in the league could out play him, the great tradition of Canadian Hockey demanded that he pulverized – but he always got up and incredibly, he never lost his temper.” –Aiden Nowlan (Writer in Resident at U.N.B)
