2015-Lesley Alison Olmstead

 

One of the best all-around athletes to ever graduate from Woodstock High School. Olmstead excelled at any and all sports she attempted. Starting in Grade 8, she made every senior team she tried out for, including basketball, volleyball, badminton and track and field, and was named WHS athlete of the year for 5 consecutive years.

 Lesley made the N.B. Canada Games Speed Skating team in 1967 and competed at the first ever Canada Winter Games in Quebec City. She went on to further Canada Games in basketball, with teams ranking 4th in 1971 and 3rd in 1975.

 In 1968, as an 18 year old, she placed 1st in the Junior Division of the N.B. Women’s Golf Open Championship. She won both low gross and low net and represented N.B. at the Canadian Golf Championships in Quebec. She won the Woodstock Golf Club Championship in 1970 and Mactaquac Club Championship in 1989 and 1990.

 After high school, she went on to excel at the University of New Brunswick (UNB). She took up field hockey for the first time in her first year, made the Varsity team in her second year and won 3 AIAA field hockey titles.

In basketball, she won 5 AIAA championships with UNB and competed in the Open Senior Championships, coming 2ndin 1969 and 3rd in 1971. The team won the Canadian Junior Championships in 1970 with Lesley playing a large role in the win, and came second at the first-ever Canadian University Championships in 1972.

 Following University, Lesley took up softball playing locally, provincially and nationally, winning Rookie of the Year for her team in 1978, then MVP in her second year. She was also top pitcher in the league and MVP of the All-star game. In 1980, her team won the league and provincial Senior B Championships and also the Eastern Canadian Championships.

 Lesley also played senior basketball after university, competing nationally from 1980 to 1984. She was a member of the 1980 championship team, the first and only senior title to date for N.B. She was invited to try out for the Canadian Senior Women’s National team in 1970.
