2018-Jean Elizabeth Bridges

Riding horses is a true lifelong sport. Jean Bridges embodied this in her equestrian life, not only in terms of competing into her 70s, but in continually giving back to the sport. Her passion was the discipline of Distance Riding, where both horse and rider must be in top condition for cross-country timed events.

Beginning in the 1980s, Jean organized skill development clinics; organized and hosted competitions; mentored others on how to organize a distance riding competition and how to participate in the sport; took home provincial, regional and national awards; and at the same time would never pass someone in need on the trail, at times impacting her own results.

Jean Bridges was the model for lifelong Sport – always continuing to develop mastery and skills, and passing along her learning to others.

Distance riding is alive and well in New Brunswick, and indeed the Atlantic Provinces, due in large part to Jean’s enthusiasm, dedication and willingness to share knowledge and ensure others have opportunities to be successful. In a sport where the motto is "to Finish is to Win,” Jean Bridges was a huge winner, and along the way helped to secure the longevity of the sport in the area by creating opportunities for others to not only participate in competitions, but do so with skillful expertise.

Alongside promotion of Distance Riding, Jean was also a promoter of the Morgan horse breed. She and her husband Elliott traveled to national Morgan horse conventions across Canada. At home, Jean organized Morgan horse demonstrations, took part with her own horses in many breed demos, contributed to countless displays of the Morgan horse at equine trade shows, and was featured in several equine magazines with her Morgan horses.

Enthusiasm; Skill; Competitive Fire – these attributes combined with a generous and giving nature allowed Jean Bridges to bring the sport of Equestrian Distance Riding to prominence in our region.
