2013-Carole Maxine Keyes

Carole Keyes is New Brunswick’s only three-time Olympian. Her sport, luge, is one of the most dangerous of all, requiring the athlete to hurtle down a frozen serpentine track, reaching speeds of 125 kilometres an hour, while reclining on a small sled.

Achievements:

·   Member of the National Luge Team(1974-84)

·   Competed in singles event at Winter Olympics Games in 1976, ’80 and ‘84

·   Best finish was 18th in 1980 at Lake Placid

·   National singles campion in 1975-76

·   North American champion in 1977 and ‘79

·   Competed in World Luge Championships in 1977 and ‘79

Keyes retired as a competitor following the 1984 Olympics and became a head coach of the Canadian Luge Team, a position she helped through the 1988 Winter Olympus in Calgary.

In addition to the Olympics, she coached the Canadian team at the 1985 and 1987 World Championships.

An Athletic therapist by profession Keyes worked with the National Women’s Basketball Team from 1980-84, accompanying the team to the Pan American and World Student Games, and to the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

Throughout her career, Keyes was one of Canada’s most respected sledders.

Keyes was inducted in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1995.

Keyes was born in Woodstock in 1953.
