WOODSTOCK HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TEAM

1940 MALCOLM TROPHY

NEW BRUNSWICK INTERSCHOLASTIC CHAMPIONS

In 1940, basketball served the community of Woodstock as a great distraction from the woes of World War II and the Town supported the Woodstock High School basketball team with well attended games and enthusiastic fans.

The boys who made up the team enjoyed success to a great extent due to their camaraderie and perseverance. Their athleticism was bolstered by their "country boy” attitude- outwardly relaxed, yet fiercely determined.

The team enjoyed a successful regular season, with some games having to be played at the Vogue Theatre due to their regular venue, the Armories, being used for wartime efforts.

The team defeated such rivals as Centreville, Canterbury and St. Stephen before advancing to the final series versus Saint John High School in March 1940. Woodstock snapped Saint John’s fifteen game winning streak by winning the first game by a tight 28-27 margin. They went on to win the series in the final game held in Woodstock by a decisive score of 24-15.

Following their win of the Malcolm Cup, the team travelled to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, to take part in the Atlantic Championships. Although they were unsuccessful in their bid, the trip to Yarmouth was a great adventure for the team. They travelled by ferry from Saint John and then by train to Yarmouth.

Coach Bob Brown, praised his team saying, "They learned their basketball the hard way, they had great teamwork, team spirit and plenty of fight. In fact, they were a swell bunch of boys. It is my earnest wish that each and every one of them enjoys the best of luck and prosperity in the years to come.”
